Mino ceramic mug with the Shunju (Spring & Autumn) motif, emblematic of the Rinpa school, founded by Ogata Kōrin. This motif combines cherry blossoms (spring) with red maple leaves (autumn), sometimes called "Clouds & Brocade" (Unkin-moyō). This combination evokes the changing beauty of the seasons.
It is derived from the Mino ceramic (Minoyaki) tradition, produced in the Tōnō region, in eastern Gifu Prefecture. Accounting for nearly 60% of ceramic tableware production in Japan, Minoyaki is now considered one of the pillars of Japanese ceramic art.
Rooted in over 1,300 years of history, Mino ceramics has its origins in the "Sueki" firing techniques, passed down from the Korean Peninsula. Since then, it has evolved while preserving the essence of its craftsmanship, to offer today pieces that fit naturally into everyday life. Without always knowing it, many Japanese families use Minoyaki on a daily basis.
